How To Upgrade iOS 5 Beta 1 On Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Ads

Apple announced iOS 5 yesterday with over 200 amazing new features. The public release of iOS 5 is slated for Fall 2011. This post will teach you how to update your Apple TV 2G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1G, 2G and iPod touch 3G, 4G on iOS 5 beta 1.

Remember: These procedures are of advance level. If you're not aware of the intricacy of these steps, it is advised that you do not try this at all. Unlocked iPhone users, please don't try this, as you will regret it. Locked iPhone users, start copying the procedure.

Installing iOS 5 beta 1 on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

  1. Download the corresponding iOS 5 beta 1 firmware file for your respective iOS device.
  2. Extract the IPSW on your desktop.
  3. Connect the iOS device to your computer.
  4. You have to get the UDID registered on the iPhone Developer program. (Here's how to do that)
  5. Once you've done that, start iTunes. Press and hold the Shift key (for Windows) or Option key (for Mac) and click Restore.
  6. Navigate to the path where you have save the iOS 5 beta 1 IPSW.
  7. Now sit back and let iTunes install iOS 5 beta 1 on your device.

You'll be out of your mind to attempt this upgrade on an unlocked iPhone. Even those iPhone users which are locked to AT&T and Verizon need to get their UDID registered before they can upgrade to iOS 5 beta 1.

Those who have the Apple TV 2G, iPod touch, 3G and 4G in the case of iOS 5, don’t need UDID registrations. However, they will not be able to sync their iPod touch running iOS 5 beta 1 with iTunes. So if you just want some hands on time with iOS 5 beta 1 and don’t actually care about syncing with iTunes, simply download the iOS 5 beta 1 IPSW for iPod touch and do a restore using iTunes 10.5 beta.

Make sure that you have dumped SHSH blobs of the current firmware on your device. Because if you like a firmware that’s older than iOS 4.3.3, you won’t be able to downgrade back to it using iTunes. For that matter, follow our detailed iFaith tutorial to downgrade iOS device back to any older iOS firmware.

That's all you need to know in order to upgrade your device to iOS 5 beta 1. However, should you encounter any problems, drop us a line in the comments and we'll help you out immediately.

UPDATE: How to Activate iPhone iOS 5 beta without Developer Account ! - No UDID required.

  • Bazziz

does the iPad 2 Wifi only need to be activated?

  • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

@Bazziz: Yes, unless you don’t want it to sync with iTunes. It is recommended that you do not try upgrading your iPad 2 right now, to iOS 5 beta 1.

    • Ori

why not upgrade ipad 2 to ios 5 beta?
      becuase of the upcoming jailbreak?
can’t i downgrade to ios 4.3.3 (saved shsh blobs) if i want to?

      • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Yes, because it has been learnt that upgrading to iOS 5 beta 1 may cause problems for a potential iPad 2 iOS 4.3.3 jailbreak. For now, you can restore iPad 2 to iOS 4.3.3 without needing SHSH blobs as Apple is currently signing this firmware version.

        • Ori

          first, thanks.
did you mean the musclenerd tweet http://mobile.twitter.com/musclenerd : “iPad2-GSM and iPad2-CDMA owners must stay clear of all 5.0 betas to stay eligible for any potential 4.3.3 JB”?
brcause he also wrote: ” the iPad2-wifi is fine (if you have 4.3.3 blobs) since it won’t error out on the baseband step during downgrade”
and i have ipad 2 wifi ao you think it’ll be fine for me?

          • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Oh yes, if you have the WiFi iPad 2, upgrade away. It won’t cause any problems. Be sure to save SHSH blobs of iOS 4.3.3 for iPad 2 before upgrading.

  • marc

hi, my install is not happening, says the firmware file is not compatible, thats an error i get from itunes, can u help

    • Anthony

DUDE THE SAME CRAP HAPPENED TO ME ON MY iPOD Touch 3g. And I paid for the uDID

  • http://www.caldwellone.com Jim

Quick question.. Will I be able to restore my settings from backup after the update? (restore apps, mail, photos, etc) I have a developer account but have never installed a beta before. I dont have a “developer only” phone so would you think it wise to upgrade on my one and only phone?

  • Mike

    Hi,
i have iphone 4 GSM officially unlocked with free SIM.. can i upgrade my ios to the beta version ??

    Cant wait till September

  • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

@Marc: Did you download the iOS beta 1 IPSW from the links we provided? Try re-downloading the IPSW file, it might help. What device are you attempting to upgrade iOS 5 beta 1 on?

    • marc

      Hi

yes downloaded the links more than once still no joy, im trying to get it on an iphone 4 gsm modelmy udid has been registered also with a friend so can understand whats wrong

      cheers

  • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

@Jim: If you have a developer account, you should first register the UDID of your device. There’s no such thing as a developer phone btw. Yes, once you have registered the UDID of your device, you will be able to restore everything from a backup you have previously made.

    • http://www.caldwellone.com Jim

Thanks for the reply.. by developer phone i have seen people that use 2 phones.. one for their normal use and one for the actual development. I am a bit nervous about putting the beta firmware on my one and only phone. I did use ifaith so i should be able to restore if needed though.. . Also, @Marc.. make sure your using the correct version of the BETA. There is a CDMA (Verizon) And a GSM (AT&T) version. Thanks again..

      • Vincent

@Jim: Thanks for clarifying it for Marc.

Putting beta firmware won’t do any damage to your phone, so you don’t have to worry about that. The least that can happen is that you will lose all your data if you have not successfully backed it up on iTunes. Once you have used iFaith, there’s really nothing to worry about. Just make sure that you keep the SHSH cache safe.

      • marc

mmmm im in the UK and on 02, its a gsm phone, would that be the issue, the beta must work surely as there are uk developers too ???

  • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

@Mike: Yes, you can update your iPhone 4, as you don’t have to worry about the baseband being upgraded. However, i’ll recommend you save the SHSH blobs cache before upgrading to iOS 5 beta 1. The link is given in the article.

  • dave

Hi, I have an iPad2 Wifi and my UDID is registered, downloaded iOS 5 Beta + iTunes 5 Beta. Should I do it?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

If you want to do it mate, you should. However, you must back up your device before you do it.

  • dave

Hi, I have an iPad2 Wifi and my UDID is registered, downloaded iOS 5 Beta + iTunes 5 Beta. Should I do it? can I sync iTuens for music and video later?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Yes, if your UDID is registered, you won’t face any problems in sychronizing it.

  • esKay

    i keep getting error 3002?
    do i need Lion OSX?
    or the iTunes Beta?

Using iPhone 4, Macbook with Snow Leopard :S

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

you need iTunes 10.5 Beta. Without it, you can NOT restore iOS 5 beta 1.

  • Rob

    I NEED HELP!!!

I registered my UDID back in October and iTunes won’t let me install iOS Beta 5.0 on my iPhone 4 GSM. It won’t let my upgrade, I get error message 3002, and when I try to do a full restore the process freezes at the very end if the restore. Any suggestions? I really wanna try out this beta.

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Have you installed iTunes 10.5 Beta? Also, the UDID you registered back in October, was it of the exact same iPhone 4 you’re using right now?

  • Rob

Yes. I have iTunes Beta 10.5 installed on my iMac and I’m still using the same exact phone. That’s why I’m confused.

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Remove any previous installations of iTunes. Try redownloading the IPSW from another source.

      • Kerry

I experienced the same issue, went through the steps recommended on the Apple help page, and it was restarting that worked. I suspect getting aspects of the new version of iTunes to take required a restart.

        • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Its a very case based scenario, however we’re really glad that its working for you now.

  • Zac

I got the same issue that firmware file is not compatible…both my ipad2 wifi and iphone4 gsm…

    What should I do?

It’ll be appreciated for any help

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Make sure that you’re downloading the correct firmware for your device. Also, remove any previous installtion of iTunes before downloading and installing iTunes 10.5 beta.

  • Oscar

I have an iPod Touch 4g. If I upgrade do I have to ge the UDID activated? Will I be able to put music on it or apps?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

You will be able to run iOS 5 beta on your ipt4 even if you don’t get your UDID activated. However, you will not be able to synchronize with iTunes. Meaning that you won’t be able to put music from your iTunes library or even apps on your iPod touch 4G. You can purchase music and apps from the iTunes Store and store it on your device. But it won’t sync with iTunes, ever, or until you get your UDID activated.

      • http://sites.google.com/site/mobileosfreedom MobileOSFreedom

Wait, so are you sure that works? So I can install iOS 5 Beta 1 on my iPod touch 4 without my UDID activated, and I just won’t be able to connect to iTunes?? And I’ll be able to use iOS 5 right away?

        • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

          Absolutely.

  • Rob

Thanks. I’ll give it a try.

  • Oscar

Will I be able to restore to 4.3.3?

  • http://www.caldwellone.com Jim

Ok I got my 4G GSM to work.. Im not sure if all these steps are needed but here is exactly how I did it on my mac mini.
Updated to the latest version of the following:
    - Snow leopard
    - Itunes 5 Beta
    - Xcode 4.2 beta
    - Upgrade the iphone to latest Non Beta first 4.3.x
    - re-register UDID through xcode beta
    - Use ifaith to backup blobs
    - follow instructions above for restore..
    - restored from backup.

    Was a pain but worked..

    • Vincent

Good to hear that you got it working. However, i’d like to make it simpler for the other readers.

Snow Leopard latest version wasn’t mandatory.
      iTunes 10.5 Beta is mandatory.
      Xcode 4.2 beta isn’t.
Upgrading the iPhone to latest non-beta 4.3.x wasn’t mandatory.
Re-registering UDID through Xcode may have helped.
iFaith is a future downgrading mechanism. Its good for everyone.
Following instructions given above are highly mandatory
Restoring from backup is required as wel.

Cheers, enjoy iOS 5 beta 1 ! Let us know if you find something interesting in it

      • Mike

i have the ios 5 and itunes 10.5 in my pc.
my mobile is official unlocked with free sim.
        am not a developer
can i upgrade my iphone pleas help me

  • Jordan

Is there a reason that when you install the iTunes 10.5 files on windows 7 x86, iTunes doesnt load but tells you its installed?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

iTunes 10.5 beta will install as any normal iTunes gets installed. Make sure that you have the correct download for your operating system. i.e. 32/64 bit.

      • Jordan

i did ensure that and it did apparently install as it went through all the normal procedures but i cannot open iTunes now

        • Paul

Uninstall the itunes beta and reboot your pc into the administrator account. Then install itunes beta. Then, reboot into your normal account and it’ll work. Right mouse clicking on the install file and selecting “run as admin” wont work.

  • HeyMan

hey, can anyone get my apple device’s udid registered for me? I apologize for the inconvenience it may cause, but if possible please let me know. I would appreciate this help very much.

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Check back tomorrow, as we’re currently working an a solution for that matter.

  • Neel Pandya

Is there any way to upgrade without registering my UDID?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Yes, you can upgrade your device to iOS 5 beta 1 without registering the UDID. However, you won’t be able to synchronize your device with iTunes. For more details on that, go here: http://iphoneism.com/2011/06/07/how-to-activate-ios-5-beta-1-firmware/

      • Neel Pandya

instead of doing option-restore, can i do option-update?

        • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

No, that won’t work. Clicking Update will prompt iTunes to check for the latest firmware on Apple’s servers, which at this point in time, is iOS 4.3.3. No use doing that.

  • Anthony

So I registered correctly, I have the firmware. I have an ipod touch 3g and when I try to install ios 5 beta 1 it says incompatible firmware. Help anyone? Email me @ anthonymcdonald95@gmail.com if u can help even thru team viewer please I don’t want my money going to waste.

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Have you installed iTunes 10.5 beta? without it you can NOT upgrade your device to iOS 5 beta. Also, did you buy a UDID activation from some random source on the internet?

      • Anthony

NO I bought it from a Trusted websource which Has been doing this since last year for ios 4 And I have 10.5 I checked in the about thing in the itunes. Well This sucks.

  • Andrew

I dl’d the iTunes 10.5 beta and the ipsw for my iPhone 4 GSM. I bought a UDID registration from a website.

When I try to option-click Restore (I’m on a mac) it tells me that the firmware is not compatible.

Is this because my UDID may not be registered yet? I bought it a few hours ago or is something else wrong?

    Thanks

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

You can’t be sure about the UDID registration you bought from an unknown website on the internet.

However, i suggest that you double check the downloaded IPSW for your iPhone 4. Make sure that you have not downloaded the CDMA version. Also, i’ll recommend downloading it from any other source that we have given in the links. Maybe the IPSW you have downloaded is corrupt or damaged.

An unregistered UDID won’t given you that error. Screenshots of what you’ll see when your UDID is not registered and you have upgraded your device to iOS 5 beta 1 can be seen here: http://iphoneism.com/2011/06/07/how-to-activate-ios-5-beta-1-firmware/

  • Michael

I have an ipod touch 3g and would like to know if i can upgrade to iOS 5 without making the blob-backup, but still can downgrade to iOS 4.3.3?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Yes, you’ll be able to downgrade to iOS 4.3.3 without SHSH blobs backup as Apple is currently signing this firmware. However, once Apple releases an official update up from iOS 4.3.3, you’re going to need SHSH blobs cache for downgrading to iOS 4.3.3.

  • Blackout046

I have and iPod Touch 4G jailbroken with iOS 4.3.3 using pwntools. I haven’t activated my UDID. I’ve downloaded iOS 5 for iPT4G and iTunes 10.5 for my Powerbook G4 PPC (not intel) laptop. I hold alt then restore and iTunes extracts the IPSW, but as soon as that’s done I recieve this message “The iPod could not be restored. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.” What should I do to pass this?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Try downloading the IPSW from another source. My ipt4 was also jailbroken on iOS 4.3.3, yet it did the update in one go. Since then, i have updated my iPod touch 4G twice to iOS 5 beta 1 without any hiccups.

Unactivated UDID won’t give you this error code. If that doesn’t help, try restoring to a stock firmware before you update to iOS 5 beta 1. Let us know if you need any more help.

      • Blackout046

Downloading… It’ll take about 30 minutes. Thank you.

        • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Let us know if you need any help. Meanwhile, why not check the new iCloud video we posted? : http://iphoneism.com/2011/06/07/icloud-automatic-app-and-music-downloads-feature-hands-on-video/

          • Blackout046

            Neat vid!

I’m going to restore firmware because I’m still receiving that screwy alert.

          • Blackout046

Unjailbroken and I still cannot try iOS 5 BETA 1 on my iPT4G. Maybe it’s my laptop. Going to restart.

          • Blackout046

No Luck. I’ll figure it out and post back some time (unless I’m killed).

    • Blackout046

      @ Lota Man

Don’t know if you know this already but here is the fix to the error message “The iPod could not be restored. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”

\/Go to this page to get your answer\/
      http://www.techtosh.com/fix-this-device-isnt-eligible-for-requested-build/

  • Nick

Hey Lota man could you activated my UDID also?

  • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

@Blackout046: Try using a different machine altogether. I once faced the same issue while trying to jailbreak iOS 4.3.2 untethered using redsn0w. It would always crash on my desktop. Restarted, redownloaded a dozen times. Switched to my netbook, it worked like a breeze.

    So use a different computer!

    • Blackout046

Didn’t see this comment. Thank you, will try later when I get the chance.

  • recif2000

I have an officially unlocked french iphone 3GS. Are they any chances that I might loss the unlocked function?
Additionally, I was about to buy an UDID online but saw a post on that topic. Are you guys planning on giving free UDID to some members?

    Thank you

An iphone user desperate for an upgrade (currently on 4.0…)

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

You must only update to iOS 4.3.3 right now as there is no unlock available for iOS 5 beta 1 right now. Upgrading to iOS 5 beta 1 will cause you to lose the unlock on iPhone 3GS.

Go here: iphoneism.com/category/jailbreak for all the related tutorials

      • recif2000

thx for that reply. Is that always the case for iOS betas?

        • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

          yes.

  • http://youtube.com/pivoteer971 Sebastian

I have downloaded iTunes 10.5 beta and the iOS 5 Beta for ipod touch 4th gen and when i hit alt-upgrade and select the firmware it says something about an error 3002. please help! (haven’t activated UDID)

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

you have to press and hold the alt key and click on Restore. Once again, click on Restore and not Upgrade. Unregistered UDID won’t be in the way of upgrading iOS device to iOS 5 beta 1.

  • wimac

Make sure you are in a Verizon service area when you do this or you are screwed because the device has to re-activate. I have to drive 50 miles to a Verizon tower. Makes NO sense that you can’t activate via other means in this day and age.

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

      Thanks for the addition

  • Pedro

Hey ive had my UDID activated with my friend. When I restore to i4 iOS B1 it says this device isnt eligible for the Req build.
btw im on snow leopard Macbook and using an iPhone 4 on 4.0.1

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

try upgrading it to stock iOS 4.3.3 first. Also, are you on a locked iPhone? Are you using iTunes 10.5 beta?

  • Blackout046

    @Lota Man

What Computer are you using? I think it might have something to do with my computer because I’ve had trouble jailbreaking iOS 4.3.3 the right way on this POS. It’s always trouble with restoring firmware using iTunes with this machine.

  • mark

i followed all the steps and was successful with getting my phone to run iOS 5 Beta… but now it would not activate. There’s no carrier and I get the message in iTunes that say I need to register my device for the developer program. Is there a way pass this or a way to restore to iOS 4.3? iTunes does not allow me to do anything with the device once it’s pulled in… any help?

  • Copy

Can i use iTunes 10.3 to restore to 5.0?

  • Mike

@Lota I have iPad 1 on 4.3.2 and I want to restore my iPad to ios 5.0 without UDID.

Will I have all the contents like apps and music still there after the restore?

When I restore, should I restore to 4.3.2 or 4.3.3?

If the next ‘developer seed’ (I dont really know what it is called) is released, just like last time before iOS 4.0 is released, how will I restore to it?

  • ferris

This won’t work on any iPads no matter what version. You need to update the post to point that out… You casually imply that it will and that’s pretty crappy when clearly it doesn’t actually work!

  • list

    Intresting, waiting for more info

  • Blackout046

Ok Lota Man! Got it working by using some old eMachine (2002) opposed to my Powerbook G4 (2005) which is old too! Thanks for your help man!

BTW whats this I hear about activating the iPod UDID without a developer account using status bar time instead of emergency triple tap?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

      Awesome!

Haven’t tried that myself, so can’t really be sure.

  • Hugh

I follow all steps, it begins the restore but gives me error code 21. Any Advice ?
*Useing iPad 2 3G GSM Version*
*No Intent to jail break either*

  • Derek

I successfully did this on my white GSM iPhone 4 and am running iOS 5.0 beta 1, however I can not double click the home button for multitasking, and more importantly it will not connect to my carrier, effectively making it an iPod touch with only Wi-Fi internet connectivity.

  • mak

Should I uninstall iTunes 10.3 before installing iTunes 10.5 beta? Or it tis ok to install 10.5 beta right away?

  • Scoobyimprezza

To install iOS 5 on Windows:
If you’re getting a message, when iTunes 10.5 is validating with apple, saying your device isn’t eligible (3194) - assuming you’ve activated your UDID properly - check out your hosts file…I didn’t edit it (maybe Tinyumbrella did)
Go here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1814 and jump down to ‘Additional Information’

  • Alex

I have a paid dev account, installed iTunes 10.5 and attempted to download the new beta, but iTunes said that the UDID wasn’t registered, even though it shows up on the dev account. Fortunately, I was able to restore it to the way it was before, but what am I doing wrong? I’ve tried twice now, and failed twice

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

If you have a paid dev account, you should be able to download the ios 5 beta 1 ipsw straight from apple developer connection.

Also, try re-registering the UDID of your device.

      • Alex

I got a funny message when trying to re register, saying the iPhone wouldn’t be able to be registered again
I did download the right beta from apple and had it installed, but the iPhone woulnt activate

        • Ori

          @Alex
sorry to bother you, is it o.k to ask you to register my udid?

  • shu

after restoring to ios 5 on my ipod touch 4g will i be able to restore back to ios 4.3.2?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Yes, you will able to restore back to 4.3.2. Follow our iFaith tutorial.

  • andrew payne

Hello, i have the beta but i did it the wrong way round i have installed the 5.0 firmware but i have tried to register the udid code thing but nothing has happened and i dont know what to do
    please help

Having issue with non-intel iMac G5 - running into error code (1). Another friend with same issue using G4 laptop. Have you seen this from others? Or any idea how to fix?

UDID is registered, not the issue.

  • Josh

Please help, I have a problem
On my 1st generation iPad it says that the servers are down for iOS 5 so I can’t get through!

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

If the servers are down, then please be patient. Try again in about an hour or so. The issue that you are facing is originating from the server side and will be resolved on its own.

Please don’t hesitate to ask us for any further help.

  • Andrew

I have successfully update to the beta, my Phone is activated and everything. I’m using it to post this. The only problem is that I can’t sync it with iTunes. It said “waiting to reconcile” and then never does anything. Can some help?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

Trying reinstalling iTunes. It is definitely going to clear this issue.

I have a problem, my iPad 2 WiFi restored to ios 5, and now it gets stuck on Could Not Activate iPad.

I don’t have my UDID registered and I do not know what is it! HELP!

I’ve seen a post where it says click home buttton 3 times to activate VOICE OVER, this is ok, and then 3 times again for EMERGENCY call - I cant get to this!

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

That procedure which you are talking about, will only work on iPhones.

Simply try restarting your device twice and try to activate it once again. An unregistered UDID won’t stop you from using iOS 5 beta 1on your device.

Please do not hesitate to ask for any more help

    • benjamin

You need to register your UDID first.

  • Zohar

On a Mac you don’t need to dump the SHSH blobs. You can restore to an older version using Xcode.

    Hi there,
    i got a problem… i downloaded the ios 5 beta 1 for my iPad 1stgen 32gb +3g
    it got my udid registered
and i got the itunes 10.5.xxx

So i click on restore: and it does the whole thing… and then disconnects from my pc (windows 7 32bit). So theres the apple logo and the loading animation rolling over the screen… but it’s stuck there… and then there’s the error: The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1603).

Well i restarted my computer… tried an other usb port.. but nothing helped..

    Did I do anything wrong?

try redownloading the iOS beta 1 ipsw for your iPad. it seems that the file you have previously downloaded is corrupt, or either hasn’t been downloaded correctly.

      • suizi

it wont work… i tried everything… downloaded the ipsw from several sources… but everytime i stucks at the apple logo with the loading animation…
        anything else i can do?

  • Ben

So I can get iOS 5 on my iPod touch but I wont be able to sync ever again?

    • http://iphoneism.com/author/lota Lota Man

only applies to beta firmware on an unregistered UDID.

  • Ben

So if I don’t register my udid on my iPod touch four I can get iOS 5 won’t but will never be able to sync again?

  • Brad

    Hello,
I need help! I downloaded iTunes 10.5 beta and the proper firmware, but when I go to update or restore to the new firmware, it either gives me error 3002 (when trying to update) or it freezes at about 75% and won’t continue the restore. What would the problem be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My phone is currently bricked because it won’t even restore back to 4.3.3 it’s just stuck in restore mode.

    • Greg

You have to restore. Option-Click Restore and find the IPSW. But you have to backup your iPhone and then you can go to iOS 5 and restore from backup so you have your data. You can go back to iOS 4.3.3 if you have the IPSW for that and just restoring from there.

  • Tfryer

Just want to make sure I understand. You can only install the iOS5 ispw with iTunes 10.5?

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

      Yes that is true.

  • MUC

I like the icloud feature the best. Thanks

  • Rogermorthland678

ipod touch 4 was running 4.3.3 now I updated to 5.0 for my version of hardware. All was good but I am stopped at could not activate ipod touch. Telling me the server is down or try to do it in iTunes, which we both know can not work any longer. I also tried to find using the iFaith program but can not find any file to work with it to do a downgrade back to 4.3.3. I did not save my blobs so I screwed up.

    Any thoughts??

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

You don’t need SHSH blobs right now if you want to downgrade to iOS 4.3.3.

  • Rogermorthland678

So if I buy the UDID I could get the ipod touch to work via itunes 10.5 beta, correct???

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

      Yes.

  • iPhoneDevJimbo

For any of you having problems with iPad conversion to iOS5beta1, make sure you downloaded the iPad specific version (GSM or CDMA), there are some links around that just point to the iPhone IPSW file, i’ve gotten it running on my iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPad & iPad2 no problems.

  • Andrew

If I put IOS 5 on my second gen apple tv will I have to activate my UDID in order to use it to the fullest? If I don’t activate the UDID, what will I be unable to do with my apple tv running IOS 5?

  • Dylan

So if I upgraded to iOS 5, would i lose all my apps, songs, contacts and other stuff on my ipod touch?

    • Dylan

I have all my apps and stuff on my computer, but if i upgraded I wouldn’t be able to sync my ipod touch with itunes? so if i wanted all my stuff back( If i did lose them) I would have to click restore on itunes?

      • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

You’ll be able to sync if you get the UDID of your device registered.

      • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

i tried to upgrade to ios 5 on my iphone 4 but it failed so then i tried restoring to 4.3.3..it would stop restoring at 3/4 of the way and fail so then i brought it out of recovery mode by jailbreaking it with redsn0w but i had to do it twice but then i only had 1 bar service and i kept trying all those steps over and over and still nothing then finally when i tried restoring again i had an idea to hold down the home button once it got to the point it on the progress bar on the phone where it usually failed at..i thought the idea wouldnt work and i was like fuck it see what it does and apparently thats the trick cause it worked..so yeah thats the way of getting around apples way of saying kiss your phone good bye for trying to do an unauthorized upgrade…..HAHA FUCK YOU STEVE JOBS gotchu beat bitch

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

Holding the home button puts your device in that “Connect to iTunes” state and since you were already connected to iTunes, it worked for you. This isn’t a work around.

      • Anthony71688

read the whole thing it was already in recovery mode but everytime i tried to restore to 4.3.3 it would fail 3/4ths of the way through and then even when i did get it out of recovery mode using redsn0w i had 1 bar service no 3g and no carrier..but finally once i tried to restore for the hundreth time on itunes it got stuck in recovery mode again and i got sick of it…so i tried rstoring once more but this time once it got 3/4ths of the way through where it normally failed at i held down the home button and it kept going so yes it is a work around

ok so ive looked everywhere and this is the only way i can find out, but!! im jailbroken on 4.3.3. if i could upgrade to ios 5 im ok with not being jailbroken but do i have to restore my iPod and delete the jailbreak to upgrade?

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

No. simply upgrade your iPod to beta firmware. However, it is indeed possible to jailbreak the latest beta of iOS 5.

I followed the steps above but after Shift & Restore, then after the ‘Preparing iPod for restore’ process, I get the error message ‘iPod “[name]“could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (17).’ I even tried DFU mode & ‘Connect to iTunes’ mode but still didn’t work. What does the error mean? Apple website doesn’t say.

PLEASE ANSWER. As Soon As Possible as the only option left is to restore back to 4.3.3

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

Reinstall iTunes. If the issue persists, use another computer.

I tried to upgrade to IOS5 but during the restore process after its extracted the software my restore process fails unknown error (16). Its frustrating cause it does it over and over again sometimes i get unknown error (17). Everytime i have to restore back to 4.3.3 which is times consuming id like to try to upgrade to ios 5 but am afraid of the tedious downgrading to 4.3.3 i may have to perform if it fails again. Does anyone know how to get around this problem.

Hey, I need help My laptop crashed and I had to have it reformatted. I lost my itunes where all my files in my ipad is backed up. I downloaded itunes again and authorized it and had all my purchased items synced. The problems is i can no longer sync the photos and songs I had synced from my original itunes. I want to update my ipad to ios5, but Im afraid I might lose the unsynced photos and music in my ipad. Will I lose the files? If yes, Is there anyway I can prevent it?

Have you installed iTunes 10.5 beta with administrator account, if not, please try doing that. I would also suggest reinstalling iTunes 10.5 beta. Preferably from another source as well.
