It is highly possible that iOS 5 jailbreak may enable third party widgets in the Notification Center of iOS 5. Currently only two stock widgets are shown in the Notification Center, one is the weather widget and the other is the stocks widget.
This Android-esque Notification Center was revealed when iOS 5 was being previewed at WWDC 2011. For long, users have complained that the notification system on iOS wasn't good, however, Apple has now greatly revamped the notification system, much credit of which must go to MobileNotifier and its developer Peter Hajas, who is now working for Apple.
Some references discovered in the iOS 5 filesystem indicate that Apple may also release a tool alongside the SDK for developers who want to create custom widgets for their applications. Even if that does not happen, the obvious way of jailbreak is always open.
It has been discovered that inside the WeeAppPlugins folder, currently both the widgets can be found which show up in the Notification Center. Hence, there is a big possibility that developers may able to code their own widgets and add them to the Notification Center. And it looks like work on this concept has already begun:
This developer has been able to code a test widget and enable it in Notification Center. Though this is just a proof of concept, now we know for sure that custom/third party widgets are possible in iOS 5. Whereas it can not be said why Apple would not allow widgets other than those of its own Stocks.app and Weather.app, this certainly means that developers will get to coding widgets for Notification Center.
More updates on iOS 5, as they come in. Stay tuned.
