Just minutes earlier, Apple seeded iOS 5 beta 4 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to developers. You can now download iOS 5 beta 4 for your iOS device, if you're a developer that is, from the developers portal. This guide will teach you how to install iOS 5 beta 4 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The first thing you need to know about iOS 5 beta 4 is that this also comes as an OTA update. iOS 5 OTA updates mean that you don't need to download iOS 5 beta 4 ipsw whole in this case, only the changes will be sent to your device that is running iOS 5 beta. The download iOS 5 beta 4 size will depend upon the changes being sent. SO if you're already running iOS 5 beta 3, here's how you update iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 5 beta 4 Over-The-Air.

Step 1: Go to the Settings.app followed by General.

Step 2: Tap on Updates. It will automatically prompt you that an update is available.

Step 3: Accept it and iOS 5 beta 4 will begin downloading straight on your device itself.

Alternatively, you can also use the following method to install iOS 5 beta 4 on your iOS device using your computer.

Step 1: Download iOS 5 beta 4 ipsw for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Step 2: Download iTunes 10.5 beta 4 for both Windows and Mac.

Step 3: Plug in your device to the computer. Be sure to back it up.

Step 4: If you are on Windows press and hold the Shift key and click on Restore. If you're on a Mac press and hold the alt key and click on Restore

Step 5: Select the iOS 5 beta 4 ipsw that you previously downloaded.

Step 6: Sit back, relax and let iTunes install iOS 5 beta 4 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

A couple of notes: If you're using a software unlocked iPhone, you must stay away from stock iOS 5 beta firmware at all costs. You will lose your unlock. Officially unlocked or carrier locked iPhones can be upgraded without any difficulties. Also, if you don't have an idea of what problems one can have with beta firmware, don't just upgrade for the sake of upgrading.

That's all you need. If you face any problems at any step of the procedure, don't hesitate to ask us for help. Our team will help you out immediately.

    Hello,
thanks for all the updates in the last weeks. I really appreciate it!!

Just one question, I updated to Version 4 over the air, and I also updated the Itunes to version four, but now Itunes keeps hanging after a while. Should i go back to Itunes version 3?

    Thanks alot

Beta version does come with its issues. However to sync iOS 5 beta 4, you will need iTunes 10.5 beta 4.

      • Ipadjunky

Thanks for the info Lota Man. At least Itunes made a backup of the Ipad and it started hanging with the sync of the apps. So let’s wait and keep playing around with the new features.

After Beta 4 is installed and I try to setup the phone again, I receive the error “cannot communicate with server” when trying to restore from the iCloud backup that was made with Beta 3. Has anyone else receive this error or know how to get the phone to restore? I can setup as a new phone just fine but I want to be able to restore from the iCloud backup that was made.

Try reinstall iTunes and redownload ipsw file. I had to reinstall iTunes and triple-check version for it to work. And I had more troubles on Windows. On Mac it’s working better.

I downloaded iTunes 10.5 and ios 5 for iPhone. But my iPhone has been plugged in to the computer (PC) and iTunes says “Verifying iPhone restore with Apple…” and has been in this part of the process for 8 hours now.

  • crystal

I upgraded my phone through my pc on my itunes and I backed it up beforehand but still lost all my apps. I’m now trying to download my apps again and they just keep saying “waiting.” Any advice?

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

You must not have made the backup correctly i presume. Sign out of your Apple ID and then Sign in again through Settings app in the Store menu.
