Apple has just released iOS 5 beta 5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Registered developers can now have access to iOS 5 beta 5 from the developers portal.
Since iOS 5 beta 4, All iOS 5 beta updates are now OTA. Meaning that if you did install iOS 5 beta 4 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, iOS 5 beta 5 will be available for you over-the-air. Simply go to the Settings.app followed by General then tap on Software Update. Make sure that you are connected to the WiFi network. The iOS 5 beta 5 download will be above 100 MB so be prepared to wait about half an hour or so for the download to finish.
OTA or over-the-air updates mean that you will not have to download the whole iOS 5 beta 5 ipsw, given the fact that you have iOS 5 beta 4 already installed. Henceforth, only the changes will be installed on your device.
If you are a registered Apple Developer, you can log in to the Developers Portal right now and have access to all the download files for iOS 5 beta 5. Non-developers will have to patiently wait for up to five hours before the files are manually uploaded to file sharing sites and torrents of them are released on the internet.
Also, according to recent reports, it seems like Apple has been terminating accounts of those developers that have been selling iOS 5 UDID activations online. If you have had your UDID activated for a fee, there is a possibility that you might not be able to upgrade to iOS 5 beta 5, if the developer that activated your UDID for a fee has had their account terminated by Apple. There's also a little heads up for those who went ahead to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 4 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 5 OTA updates do not work on jailbroken devices. So if you want to receive iOS 5 beta 5 OTA update, it is advised that you do a clean iOS 5 beta 4 restore on your device and then proceed with the OTA update.
To download iOS 5 beta 5 OTA, you first need to erase all content and settings on your device. So before you proceed, back up your device on iTunes. Then go in to the Settings.app and tap on General. Now scroll down and tap on Reset followed by Reset all content and Settings. If you have not changed the restrictions password, the default will be four zeros. Enter that and erase all content and settings on your device.
