Save iOS 4.1 SHSH Blobs As Apple Continues To Sign That Firmware

This is a bit uncanny but it turns out that Apple is still signing iOS 4.1 on its servers. Meaning that previously even if you did not save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to secure the option of downgrading back to it, you can do so now.

The matter was brought to attention by one of the readers over at iDB who claimed to have been able to save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs of his iPhone 3GS and his son's 2G iPod touch. We previously said this was uncanny, and allow us to explain as to why we said that.

First, you must keep in mind that iOS 4.1 was released back in September last year. So without a doubt, it is not the most recent firmware on Apple's servers. Technically, you can only save SHSH blobs of the most recent firmware which isn't exactly the case with iOS 4.1. This is also uncanny because as of now, you can't even save SHSH blobs of iOS 4.3.4 which came out over three weeks ago and was immediately succeeded by iOS 4.3.5 in just one week. Theoretically, iOS 4.3.5 is the most recent firmware on Apple's servers and one should only be able to save iOS 4.3.5 SHSH blobs, not of any older firmware. Why Apple is still signing iOS 4.1 on its servers, is hard to tell.

One thing to keep in mind though, you can only save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs of devices that do not have the A4 processor. Disregard the iPad 2 as it does not come with support for iOS 4.1, the least it can run is iOS 4.3 with which it was initially launched. This means that as of now, you can save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs of

  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPod touch 2G
  • iPod touch 3G

One major advantage of having the opportunity right now of saving iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs is that you can downgrade to iOS 4.1 and can jailbreak it untethered. This is particularly great for those who have never saved SHSH blobs and now lament their destiny as there is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.5. There are two ways you can do this. You can either use TinyUmbrella on your Windows or Mac machine to save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs. To do that, follow this tutorial.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPod touch 2G or 3G you can simply download iSHSHit from Cydia for free. Using that, you can easily save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs for your respective device, on the device itself. iSHSHit also allows you to email a copy of saved SHSH blobs to yourself, for safe keeping purposes.

Till the writing of this post, iOS 4.1 was being signed by Apple. The image embedded above shows a device running on jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 being able to save iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs using iSHSHit.
