Nearly twelve hours ago, Apple seeded iOS 5 beta 6 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to developers. Obviously, the first question that sprung to our minds was would it be possible to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 6 using the existing beta version of redsn0w which was released to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5? The answer is, yes we can.
Basically, if the exploit that was used to jailbreak any particular firmware has not been patched in its successor, you can use redsn0w to apply a tethered jailbreak to the latest firmware by just pointing it to the ipsw of the previous firmware. To put it in simple terms, just launch redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 5 and select the iOS 5 beta 5 ipsw for your corresponding device. Then follow all the steps just as you would normally and jailbreak iOS 5 beta 6 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch albeit tethered.
No official word about iOS 5 beta 6 jailbreak has been received as yet from the iPhone Dev Team however that didn't stop us from testing whether or not the previous release of redsn0w could work on beta 6 of iOS 5 as well.
Do keep in mind that redsn0w will jailbreak your device tethered. A tethered jailbreak means that whenever you have to reboot your device, even if it runs out of charge, you'll have to connect it to the computer, launch redsn0w and do a little procedure to boot it tethered. Its isn't much of a hassle if you're not prone to rebooting your device a dozen times a day. An untethered jailbreak eliminates the necessity of connecting your device to the computer for booting up, but expecting an untethered iOS 5 beta jailbreak is like expecting Apple to literally start selling, apples.
Redsn0w 0.9.8b5 iOS 5 beta 6 jailbreak is compatible with the following devices:
- iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA)
- iPhone 3GS
- iPad 1
- iPod touch 3G
- iPod touch 4G
Heads up: If you have a software unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, you must stay FAR AWAY from stock iOS 5 beta firmware. Upgrading to it will upgrade your baseband rendering your iPhone useless. Factory unlocked iPhone owners, or those who are locked to their respective carriers and couldn't care less about an unlock may proceed to install and jailbreak iOS 5 beta 6 on their iPhones without any worries. Also, this won't work on the iPad 2 because it is not susceptible to the Limera1n bootrom exploit. You can only jailbreak iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.3 using JailbreakMe 3.0.
