iOS 5 beta 7 Tethered Jailbreak / Boot Using Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 [How To]

Yesterday, Apple released iOS 5 beta 7 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It came as the usual OTA update for supported devices. A little while after that, word came in from the iPhone Dev Team that an iOS 5 beta 7 tethered jailbreak was possible using redsn0w 0.9.8b7 which was released day before yesterday. In this tutorial, you'll be shown all the steps required to do for an iOS 5 tethered jailbreak on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Do keep in mind that you can only jailbreak iOS 5 beta 7 tethered as of now. The list of compatible devices is as follows:

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPad 1
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G

Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 is capable of doing an iOS 5 beta 7 tethered jailbreak on the above mentioned devices. The jailbreak is going to be tethered, meaning that if your devices runs out of battery or you need to reboot it, you will have to connect it to your computer and run redsn0w in order to do an iOS 5 beta 7 tethered boot. There is no possibility of an iOS 5 beta untethered jailbreak as of now, because the devs would obviously not want to make any untethered exploit public only to have Apple patch it in the next beta update.

Also keep in mind that redsn0w 0.9.8b7 will not jailbreak iPad 2. The second generation iPad is not susceptible to the Limera1n bootrom exploit which is the primary reason why redsn0w can't jailbreak iPad 2. The only firmware that you can jailbreak iPad 2 on is iOS 4.3.3 using JailbreakMe 3.0. Why only iOS 4.3.3? Because soon after the iPad 2 jailbreak went live, Apple released iOS 4.3.4 firmware and patched the exploit used by JailbreakMe 3.0. Even if you're running iOS 4.3.5, you can't jailbreak your iPad 2 on it. So if you're luckily on iOS 4.3.3, here's how to jailbreak iPad 2.

iOS 5 beta 7 Tethered Jailbreak Procedure:

*Note: All download links given at the end of this article.

Before you begin, you obviously need to download iOS 5 beta 7 ipsw for your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Once you have done that, you need to download redsn0w 0.9.8b7 for your Windows or Mac computer. When that is done, follow these steps. Remember, when you reach Step 5 you have to select the corresponding iOS 5 beta 6 ipsw for your device instead of the iOS 5 beta 7 ipsw. Follow the remaining steps as given in the tutorial for an iOS 5 beta 7 tethered jailbreak and boot.

Download iOS 5 beta 7 ipsw for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Download iOS 5 beta 6 ipsw (required in Step 5 of the jailbreak process)
Download iTunes 10.5 beta 7 for Windows and Mac
Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b7 for Mac and Windows

I am currently back to IOS 5 Beta 6 JB. I was able to get IOS 5 B7 on the iPhone 4 but the problem comes in is when I JB using 0.9.8b7 with the IPSW IOS 5 B6 it goes through the initial process correctly. I reboot and the White Cydia Icon appears. I then perform the tethered reboot to get Cydia back to normal which is the process with IOS 5 B6 JB. When I attempt to reboot tethered it will perform the steps and at reboot it just hangs there for about 10 minutes or so and then reboots(this is not a normal time for the reboot) and once it does reboot I still get the Cydia White Icon. I have tried about 5 times and nothing works. I went back to IOS 5 B6 because of this.

    Anyone experience this problem?

Are you using the correct version of redsn0w?

    Hello,
I have a little problem. Restore to Beta 7 official goes fine. Then Redsn0w to Beta 6 also runs fine, but on reboot, I can’t access this filesystem with iPhone Explorer or PhoneView…
no way ti get to the file where I m supposed to strip down the beta key …

so the phone still needs UDID registration… anyone found a solution ?

Is installing cydia alone makes the filesystem accessible ???
Should opemSSH also be installed for this thing to work ?

    Thanks

    Hello,
I installed succesfully iOS 5 to my new bootrom iPhone 3GS, but I can’t jailbreak it or I can’t boot tethered. First I tried to jailbreak with beta 6 ipswand than tethered boot, but it booted to the set up screen.
After that I tried to jailbreak with beta 7 ipsw and than tethered boot. It started with the pineapple logo, but it had disappeared and the apple logo appeared and it booted to the set up screen. What did I wrong?

    Thanks

I see that it says to select the old firmware. I am trying to do this from an non-jailbroken iphone 4 CDMA. Do I have to download beta 6 first?

    • nevembalint

no, you don’t have to. now that Redsn0w 0.9.8b7b is downloadable, you can load the beta 7, but only if you use Redsn0w 0.9.8b7b.
