Stefan Esser, most commonly known as i0n1c in the jailbreak community has hinted at a possible iPhone 4S iOS 5 untethered jailbreak release. Stefan Esser previously released an untethered jailbreak that was compatible with not one, not two, but three iOS firmware versions.

Apple announced iOS 5 at WWDC 2011 earlier this year. Since then developers were seeded 7 betas of iOS 5 and recently at the iPhone 4S release event, Apple seeded iOS 5 GM for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The GM seed is very much similar to the final public release of iOS 5 that is going to be on October 12. iOS 5 is Apple's most extensive update to its mobile platform with over 200 new features including but not limited to AirPlay Mirroring, Notification Centre and iMessages.

Stefan Esser a.k.a i0n1c is a well known hacker and he previously released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 which actually turned out to be compatible with iOS 4.3.2 and iOS 4.3.3. Apple patched his untethered exploit in iOS 4.3.4. Jailbreak devs have not worked on an untethered jailbreak since iOS 4.3.3 primarily due to the impending public release of iOS 5. To say that iOS 5 tethered jailbreak will be available for devices susceptible to Limera1n bootrom exploit merely days after the public release won't be a long shot. However its the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak that is a cause of concern for jailbreakers. No one knows how much time it would take for the jailbreak devs to find and develop untethered jailbreak exploits in iOS 5. Nevertheless the Chronic Dev Team revealed earlier last month at MyGreatFest that they have 5 new untethered jailbreak exploits that would also work with the next generation iPhone.

Now we've already discussed the possibility of iPhone 4S untethered or tethered jailbreak. It all depends upon two factors. Either the devs are able to dump A5 bootrom, or the 5 new userland exploits that the Chronic Dev Team talked about actually work, in both cases we will have iOS 5 tethered and untethered jailbreak particularly for both the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S as well as other devices which support iOS 5.

Earlier today, Stefan Esser revealed via Twitter that iOS 5 untethered jailbreak was being covered by other people, leaving the guess work to our imagination:

As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who

Given Stefan Esser's standing in the jailbreak community, he is bound to know who is working on the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. The best part is that iOS 5 is coming out in two days and the iPhone 4S in just four days. Within one week we shall know for sure if an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak release is imminent and whether or not it is going to be compatible with iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. You know where to come in order to find that out, right here at iPhoneism.com!
