For many people, iOS 5.0.1 was supposed to bring the fix for battery problems, particularly for the iPhone 4S battery drain issue. However, it looks like that is not the case as multiple reports from a number of sources suggest that battery issues still persist in devices running iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 firmware.
Apple released iOS 5.0.1 for public download yesterday merely a week after it seeded iOS 5.0.1 beta 1 and iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 to developers. In the final release notes Apple has noted that this latest firmware update brings crucial bug fixes, particularly for the battery issues faced by many consumers around the world.
The battery drain issue was initially reported by iPhone 4S owners, who obviously weren't happy with the fact that their brand new smartphones were not living up to the promised battery timing. Apple soon took notice of that and started reaching out to consumers for seeking their help in order to find a fix for iPhone 4S battery drain issue. In yesterday's iOS 5.0.1 firmware release, it was made clear that this would be end of all battery issues faced by owners of not just the iPhone 4S, but of other supported iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners as well.
Regardless of that, in addition to what our own in-house testing has revealed, reports from multiple sources indicate that for some users, iOS 5.0.1 has not fixed the battery drain issue. Some even said that battery drain issues on their devices actually begun after they had updated to iOS 5.0.1, as they hadn't faced any such issues when they were on iOS 5 firmware. Apple has once again taken notice of this problem and has given the following statement to ATD:
The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices [...] We continue to investigate a few remaining issues
While they have not explicitly mentioned that another firmware update will be rolled out in order to fix this battery drain issue once and for all, its highly likely that this could happen over the coming weeks. These updates are merely small ones which do not come bearing any new features. All that's included in these updates are bug fixes, performance and stability improvements.
We'll let you know when iOS 5.0.2 is on the horizon, so keep watching this space.
