A new jailbreak tool has been released in beta stage for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion. Ac1dSn0w can jailbreak iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 firmware tethered on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This guide will teach you exactly how you can jailbreak iOS 5 and iOS 5.01 firmware tethered using Ac1dSn0w.

Before we start with the tutorial, let us first introduce to you the PwnDevTeam. If you follow up regularly with jailbreak related news, you're bound to know the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team, both of which are not short of pioneers in the jailbreak arena. Their redsn0w, pwnagetool and greenpois0n jailbreak tools, respectively, have helped millions around the world in jailbreaking their devices. Now the PwnDevTeam has entered the picture with their new jailbreak tool called Ac1dSn0w which is in beta stage at the moment. While it doesn't do anything unique that can set it apart from redsn0w, pwnagetool or greenpois0n, besides jailbreaking iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 tethered on Mac, the PwnDevTeam promises to add some really interesting features to Ac1dSn0w in the future.

The PwnDevTeam has mentioned on their blog that Ac1dSn0w is in early development stage. At this point in time its only available for Mac OS X and it can only jailbreak iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 tethered as well as boot jailbroken devices tethered. However soon enough Ac1dSn0w will have the ability to perform a remote jailbreak. What this means is that by installing a server program on any operating system such as Linux, OS X or Windows Ac1dSn0w will be able to jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod touch using a client program from anywhere around the world. This feature will immensely help those who seek guidance from their friends or family for jailbreaking their devices, particularly when these people can't drop by and help in person. Other possible features include custom firmware creation and iRecovery Remote.

Ac1dSn0w can jailbreak iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 tethered on the following devices:

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPad 1
  • iPod touch 4G

How To Jailbreak iOS 5 And iOS 5.0.1 On iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad And iPod Touch 4G Using Ac1dSn0w:

Step 1: Download Ac1dSn0w for Mac OS X

Step 2: Run Ac1dSn0w after download finishes

The four buttons are self explanatory. You can click on Show Console to view device information as well as status of jailbreak. Clicking on Show Assistant will guide you through the process of putting your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in DFU mode, which is mandatory for applying the jailbreak.

Step 3: Connect the device you want to jailbreak and turn it OFF. Then click on Show Assistant to put it in DFU mode

Step 4: When your device enters DFU mode, simply click on the Jailbreak button and wait for Ac1dSn0w to apply the tethered jailbreak on iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 firmware. The device will automatically reboot once jailbreak has been applied.

Step 5: Now click on Show Assistant to put your device in DFU mode again. After that, click on the Tethered Boot button. When the device is finished rebooting, it will be fully jailbroken with Cydia installed and ready to use.

Do keep in mind that Ac1dSn0w is not a new jailbreak. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 still can not be jailbroken on any iOS 5 firmware version. This is merely a new tool for jailbreaking the above mentioned devices on iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1. You can also convert this iOS 5 tethered jailbreak in to an untethered jailbreak of sorts. Follow our guide to get an iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak of sorts.

I followed the steps on a 3Gs with iOS 5 but the Cydia app hasn’t appeared, does this mean it hasn’t fully completed the jailbreak?
