Earlier today in a blog post on his blog, pod2g has revealed that he has been able to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 untethered on iPod touch 3G. Up till now, the iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak progress is going along nicely.
Initially, pod2g only released a video in which he revealed that he had been able to jailbreak iOS 5.0 untethered on an iPod touch. He said that it was possible that this exploit could be used on all iOS 5 supported devices. Soon after that, pod2g announced in an update that his exploit was working on iOS 5.0.1 as well.
Previously we had warned our users against updating to iOS 5.0.1 firmware because it was expected that an iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak would not be possible. Regardless of that, pod2g has confirmed that his userland exploit does work on iOS 5.0.1 and he is currently in process of testing it out on various devices.
From his blog post:
Hey, this one's (iPod touch 3G) done.
Next: iPod 4G, iPad 1, iPhone 3Gs.
Rushing the best I can.
Bye !
Currently, the same exploit is being tested on fourth-generation iPod touch, original iPad and the iPhone 3GS. It is highly likely that this exploit will work on all of these devices without a glitch. No word as yet whether this exploit will work for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak.
Right now, there is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1. You can only jailbreak it tethered using redsn0w or ac1dsn0w. There's also an untethered jailbreak of sorts available. Once you have jailbroken your device tethered, download the Semi-Tether package from Cydia. It's an untethered jailbreak of sorts, allowing you to use your device without booting tethered. Semi-Tether allows limited functionality, Cydia, native Mail app, mobile Safari and all jailbreak tweaks will not function in Semi-Tethered mode. Be advised that both iPhone 4S and iPad 2 can not be jailbroken even tethered on any iOS 5 firmware version.
Pod2g has not given out a specific release date for this jailbreak, however its possible that testing will be completed in the next couple of weeks. Expect a release somewhere around Christmas. We'll let you know when it happens!
