People are anxiously awaiting pod2g jailbreak iPhone 4S untethered 5.0.1 iOS release, particularly due to the fact that he has confirmed this jailbreak works on all devices running iOS 5, 5.0.1 except iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Unfortunately, pod2g has run in to a slight problem.
During the last couple of weeks we've received a number of updates from pod2g regarding the status of iOS 5, 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak. Only two days back he announced that the jailbreak was fully working on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and the original iPad running either iOS 5 or 5.0.1 firmware. Recently he got his hands on an iPhone 4S and began testing out his untethered exploit on it. Sadly, pod2g jailbreak iPhone 4S untethered has encountered a slight problem, which the hacker himself aptly explains on his blog:
Hello.
Here are the news of the 4S week-end.
The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues.
I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.
I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance.
I'll report you my progress tomorrow.
This update is pretty self explanatory. While this error isn't something that would make us all lose hope in an iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak, its likely to push back the release schedule considerably, because one must account for the fact that pod2g's whole life doesn't revolve around making and testing jailbreak exploits.
Regardless of that, it is possible for this jailbreak to be based upon a userland exploit. A userland exploit exists in the software and is very easy for Apple to patch. Whenever pod2g jailbreak iPhone 4S untethered is released we can expect a software update immediately from Apple to patch this exploit. Even if a new software update, probably iOS 5.0.2, is released before pod2g releases his jailbreak, we caution you not to upgrade your device to it as pod2g's jailbreak is only compatible on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1.
Right now, one can only take a wild guess on when this jailbreak will be ready for release. Do keep in mind though, if it works on the iPhone 4S, it will work on the iPad 2 as well. We just have to wait and see when pod2g jailbreak iPhone 4S untethered is ready for public use. We'll keep you updated!
