New Nissan iPhone cases were displayed at a motor show in Dubai. These particular iPhone cases are the only ones in the world that are self repairing and self healing. In other words, these cases are very resistive to scratches and can even heal themselves after being subjected to moderate scratches.
One can not expect an automobile manufacturer to start making cases for smartphones such as the iPhone. However the technology being used in these Nissan iPhone cases is somewhat similar to what is used by the manufacturer in its cars. Nissan has developed a special paint technology that is normally used in its vehicles. However this technology is now being applied to make Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone cases.
The self healing finish of these Nissan iPhone cases was first introduced by Nissan back in 2005. This particular paint technology, developed by Nissan together with University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc., is being applied to a various of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The material used for this case is called ABS Plastic. It offers extreme flexibility and a glossy, gel like finish to the cover. This glossy finish is scratch resistant and allow allows firm grip on the device.
Still confused on how these cases heal themselves? Allow Nissan to explain:
The outer ‘paint’ is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap – ‘healing’ the blemish.
Don't expect these Nissan iPhone cases to repair themselves if a scratch is so deep that it cuts across the top layer entirely. The finish as well as this concept, is good for scratches that an iPhone case may be subjected to in average daily use. The unique properties of these iPhone cases will ensure that they never lose that amazing, just-like-new, finish.
At the motor show in Dubai, only a number of these Nissan iPhone cases were handed out to journalists for testing purposes. The company says that if the initial response is good, they will start mass production and open up sales to the public.
