The new R-SIM interposer claims to unlock iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1 and iOS 5.0. Currently no software based unlock solution for iPhone 4S exists.
Ever since the iPhone 4S was released last year, jailbreakers and unlockers have patiently waited for any sign of hope. While an untethered iOS 5.0.1, 5.0 jailbreak for iPhone 4S has already been released, there is no sign of a software unlock for iPhone 4S. For all we know, an unlock for iPhone 4S is still in the works.
Basically there are two ways to unlock an iPhone. Through either software or hardware. Using a SIM interposer is the hardware unlock solution. An interposer works by spoofing the IMSI number of an iPhone. The legality of this method is being debated upon.
TPSIM interposer cropped up last week claiming to unlock iPhone 4S on basebands 1.0.11, 1.0.13 and 1.0.14. We doubted its credibility as the makers of this interposer have never been heard of in the circuit. R-SIM interposer is no different. It comes from a previously unheard of manufacturer and has not been reviewed or tested by a legitimate party. It costs $57.99, so look before you leap.
R-SIM interposer works like any other interposer. There's no need for the iPhone 4S to be jailbroken. Simply insert the SIM card along with this interposer in an iPhone 4S. First wait for a couple of seconds then navigate to Settings > Call > Sim Appliciation > Country & Operators. Select the network of your desire. Go back to previous menu and select Enter 1122 mode. Tap on Accept when the message comes up. Wait for 5 seconds precisely and dial 112. Pull the SIM out when dialling commences. Tap on Yes and insert SIM back inside along with R-SIM interposer.
It has been mentioned on the product page that R-SIM interposer is not compatible with 3G networks. Meaning that you will have to use GPRS even if you are on a 3G network. Other than that, the manufacturer promises free delivery with tracking number in two weeks.
Until a legitimate report comes in, we can't be really sure whether R-SIM interposer really does unlock iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1, 5.0. For all we know, this could be a scam to pilfer that $57.99 from your pocket.
