Stefan Esser a.k.a i0n1c has shown off iPad 2 jailbreak on 5.1 iOS via Twitter. A couple of hours back he tweeted some pictures of an iPad 2 jailbroken on the latest iOS 5.1 firmware. More details after the break.
i0n1c is a well known iOS hacker and security expert. He is the man who released an untethered exploit that lasted for three consecutive firmware versions, iOS 4.3.1, 4.3.2 and 4.3.3. Since then he has been off from the front lines, because we didn't see any new exploits from him for firmwares that came out after 4.3.3. Stefan has resurfaced once again with a big, this time with an iPad 2 jailbroken on the freshly released iOS 5.1 firmware update.
We know that p0d2g is also working for iPad 2 jailbreak on 5.1 iOS. He is responsible for the first ever jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1, the Corona untethered exploit that was released in Absinthe jailbreak tool. There have been no further updates from him regarding progress, though sooner or later he is bound to come up with something.
The nature of this jailbreak is not yet known. Stefan has not revealed whether this is a userland exploit or if he has finally been able to dump the A5 iPad 2 bootrom. We don't even know whether it's a tethered or untethered iPad 2 jailbreak on 5.1 iOS. One thing is for sure though, i0n1c won't fake having a jailbreak. We're sure that in the coming days more details on this jailbreak will be revealed.
iOS 5.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch was released merely a week ago. This is the first major iOS platform update since Apple originally released iOS 5.0 back in October 2011. At this point in time, older iOS devices can be jailbroken tethered on 5.1 iOS using redsn0w. Getting an iPad 2 jailbreak on 5.1 iOS so early after release is surely going to be an amazing feat.
