The New iPad was announced back on March 7, 2012. Many had speculated that Apple's third generation tablet would not be a hit due to some obvious reasons. However things are turning out to be on the contrary. Apple has sold a record number of 3 million New iPad units during the first weekend. These numbers are from the 10 initial countries in which the device was released on March 16.

Even this time around, Apple pulled off the same stunt they did with the iPhone 4S. New iPad is similar in terms of design and structure to the iPad 2. A lot of improvements have been made under the hood. These include an all new A5X dualcore chip, 1GB of RAM, 4G LTE compatibility and a 5 megapixel iSight camera. The most amazing improvement however, is the new Retina Display. A display so gorgeous that you literally wouldn't want to tear you eyes away from it. The Retina Display has 264 pixels per square inch, the pixel density per square inch is so high that the naked eye can't distinguish an individual pixel.

During yesterday's conference call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company had had a record weekend as far as sales of New iPad are concerned. At that time, he did not reveal any specific numbers. Analysts have estimated these numbers to be between 500,000 to 1 million. Today in a press release, Phil Schiller reveals numbers that are literally shocking.

Apple today announced it has sold three million of its incredible new iPad, since its launch on Friday, March 16. Phil: The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet. Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday

Currently the New iPad is being sold through retail stores in 10 countries which include US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands. Starting March 23, the New iPad will be available in an additional 24 countries. One can only imagine how many units Apple will sell in a week after that.
